Ed Lein - Bio-sketch

Dr. Lein is the Director of Neuroscience at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, where he has been integrally involved in the generation of the Allen Brain Atlas, a genome-scale in situ hybridization database of gene expression in the adult mouse brain.  These data provide a remarkable resource to understand the relationship between gene expression and functional brain architecture, and Dr. Lein's research focuses on using these large scale gene expression data to probe the molecular anatomy of the hippocampus and neocortex, in the process helping to develop tools for effective mining and correlation-based analyses of cellular resolution image-based data.  Particular areas of interest include understanding cellular diversity in cortical structures and the underlying combinatorial transcriptional profiles that give rise to distinct cellular phenotypes.
